MaxBrake Hydraulic over Electric Variable Trailer Brake
Controller and
Trailer Light Tester |
Trailer
brakes are very important to me. Besides towing doubles (two
trailers) around the country, I also live near the mountains in
Colorado. Coming down the fast side of the Rockies, increases the
need for powerful brakes.

Your truck has more power, your trailer
has grown heavier - being able to stop all that dependably and
safely is why I recommend MaxBrake. The most powerful and fastest
trailer brake controllers activate with your
trucks hydraulic brake system. Big
advantage having your trailer brakes engage
with your truck brakes, not after.
MaxBrake website
When Ford came out with its first
integrated trailer brake controller in 2005
in its Super Duties, it was hydraulic activated
and still is, including the one available
for the F150 for 2009. MaxBrake hydraulic
over electric is a simple install, just one
wire cable goes through the fire wall from
the hydraulic sensor to the controller. The
power supply is inside the cab. Don't let
bleeding the trucks brake fluid scare you.
It's just a couple of drops on the supplied
"T" connection. Back before ABS, that's how
most brake controllers worked. MaxBrake and
ABS do not affect each other. MaxBrake does
not tie in to the ABS module/computers.

The closest you
can get to MaxBrake is the Ford factory
controller, but it doesn't work with
hydraulic trailer brakes according to Ford.
In Ford's first few years, under 12 mph, the
gain would drop off and not give you trailer
brakes at slow speed. Something folks on
steep grades discovered. GM and Dodge came
out with integrated brake controller options
but are only electronic controlled, not
working off your trucks hydraulic brake
pressure.
Today's
slant load horse trailers with large Living Quarters, are popular
and heavy. Having a LQ is like pulling a loaded trailer all the
time. Propane tanks, water, TV etc. keep the weight growing.

Trailer brakes
have come a long, way and the MaxBrake is
the leader in improving your safety, your
horse's safety and comfort as well as the
rest of the population you share the roads
with. Trailer brakes are often neglected
until there is problem. I've spent too much
time with a flashlight in my mouth,
sometimes in the rain, working on my trailer
brakes, magnets, wiring, and fuses after I
discovered my brakes weren't helping any.
Heavy loads and shifting animals require
that everything works, and surprises can be
deadly. You won't find a better product for
dependable brake and whole trailer
management. MaxBrake can put your trailer
at the same level of technology that your
enjoy with your new truck.

The
MaxBrake controller gives you a
proportional trailer brake in relation to
your tow vehicle. It achieves this by
utilizing a pressure sensor mounted at the
master cylinder that measures the output
pressure of your tow vehicle. The
pressure sensor utilized is compatible with
all ABS systems used for any tow vehicle. It
does not displace any brake fluid and it is
the same sensor that many manufactures use
in their Vehicle Dynamic Control systems for
ABS. This measurement is turned into a
signal and sent back to the actuating system
on your trailer brakes. This is all
accomplished using microprocessors; there
are no pendulums or accelerometers in
the MaxBrake. The MaxBrake controller
easily attaches to the dash and is a truly
intelligent computer brake controller.

Why would you want a
trailer brake controller that waited for the trucks
reaction when MaxBrake engages with your truck
brakes?
I
thought overload springs were for overloading.
Every load of hay will weigh different. How close to
your truck and trailer max weight rating are you and
can you stop in an emergency? As roads get over
crowded, farm machinery, stray cows and teenagers
test your stopping power and reaction time. |
MaxBrake is capable of
applying full brake voltage to the trailer
even when the gain is set to the lowest
setting. The driver sets the gain to the
most comfortable setting allowing you to
adjust softness or firmness of the trailer
brakes. MaxBrake remembers the calibration
settings for the pressure sensor based on
how you "train" the pressure sensor to your
brake pedal. MaxBrake eliminates the annoying frequent
gain adjustments necessary between loaded
and unloaded trailer conditions. Since a
full trailer brake is always available at
any gain setting, MaxBrake provides a safety
factor most other electronic brake
controller wish they had. MaxBrake provides the most proportional
truck brake to trailer brake response
available.
The
MaxBrake is microprocessor controlled, it
consistently matches tow vehicle and trailer
braking requirements, reads the brake-line
fluid pressure for the smoothest and best
modulation. A manual override allows
for finger application of the trailer
brakes.
Heavy
duty trucks like the Ford F650 and Freightliner M2 with
air brakes can also use MaxBrake. When you order,
MaxBrake provides an air pressure sensor and an air tee
instead of the hydraulic pressure sensor.

Understanding MaxBrake's Intelligent
Design:
- MaxBrake is easy to install. Calibrate the MaxBrake to your
brake pedal and the vehicle installation is complete.
- Once a trailer is plugged in, the MaxBrake detects if any
brake magnets or electric over hydraulic motors are connected.
- The harder you press your brake pedal, the harder your
trailer brakes will be applied. The softer you press your brake
pedal, the softer your trailer brakes will be applied. This is
a very familiar and natural way to control your brakes, and this
is exactly what MaxBrake is designed for. MaxBrake give you
total control of your trailer brakes at all times regardless of
load size or speed, even in reverse.
- MaxBrake also has a “fine tuning” adjustment knob. This
allows you to fine tune your ride using the CVBC (Continuous
Variable Brake Control) adjuster. You can set the CVBC adjuster
anywhere between 0 and 100. This guarantees you the smoothest
ride possible.
- The lower you set the CVBC adjuster the less brake pedal
sensitivity will occur.
- The higher you set the CVBC adjuster the more brake
pedal sensitivity will occur.
- Most users prefer a CVBC setting of about 35 to 40 for
all towing loads.
How does hydraulic over electric work?
The MaxBrake™ brake controller uses hydraulic vehicle brake pressure
to control electric trailer brakes. MaxBrake™ uses a pressure sensor
installed directly at the vehicle master cylinder to monitor vehicle
brake pressure. It is easy for the handyman to install the pressure
sensor without any special tools. The pressure sensor does not
affect ABS brakes. There is no hydraulic brake line to run into the
vehicle cab. As the driver applies the brake pedal, MaxBrake™
monitors vehicle brake pressure and sends a variable output to the
electric trailer brakes. MaxBrake™ makes your trailer brakes feel
like they are attached to your brake pedal. You have complete
control over how much or how little to apply the trailer brakes.

This
kind of trailer (above) is very easy to overload. Any heavy
trailer needs MaxBrake powerful fast trailer brake
controller for electric or hydraulic trailer brakes for maximum stopping speed and
power. Great combination with disc brakes. Look

MaxBrake trailer brake
controller will run electric or hydraulic brakes and talk about
power! When you are applying the brakes, you don't know you have a
trailer on back! The is no jerk when the trailer brakes kick in.
This was pulling a trailer with electric brakes too. The controller
is programmable to fine tune your trailer braking requirements but
why? It's automatic and self adjusting, displaying trailer brake system problems.
MaxBrake does exactly what your foot
does on the brake pedal regardless of the trailer type or load. The
driver presses the brakes harder or softer to meet all braking
needs. You've probably
heard how great pendulum style brake controllers are. MaxBrake trailer brake controller goes one better by
sensing the truck's pedal pressure (hydraulic pressure) with
their solid-state pressure sensor. In other words the
trailer brakes are activated at the same time as the truck's
brakes. Now how can you beat that for speed?

else can you check all your lights by yourself?
Every trailer you plug your
truck to, can be tested by one person. Always wondered how
folks tested brake lights by themselves. I can't run that
fast. I guess you'd have to back up to a white wall or
something.
Every trailer dealer needs
one, or for that matter anyone that tows without a co-pilot.

BrakeSmart is light years ahead in the trailer industry.
By using the latest computer technology, their BrakeSmart brake controller
and Smart Box can manage and diagnose all aspects of your trailer including
air axles, auto leveling, Living Quarters, and power jack battery management,
trailer light auto off, anti-theft brake lock, and like your truck you can
have ABS on your trailer. ABS is required on trucks 10,000# GVWR and above and will be
part of many future government trailer brake requirements.
Modern horse trailers with Living Quarters and RV fifth wheel trailers can have many complicated electrical
components.
The BrakesSmart
